I read I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak on Sunday, so I thought I’d share my view on it.

Let me start by saying that I LOVED The Book Thief so I went into this open minded since I like Zusak’s work.  However, it took me a little while to get interested in it.  The premise was intriguing (read a blurb here) and it was given to me by a friend, so I was determined to get into it.

It took about 50 pages but I finally got there. Once I was in, I finished the book in a day.  I enjoyed it, but here are a couple things I wasn’t fond of:

• I like to be slowly introduced to characters.  In this book, Zusak gives character descriptions, life histories, etc. all in one chunk.  I prefer subtlety. 
• The characters had all of these life lessons to learn (they were good lessons) and they act as though they haven’t done anything with their lives and they’ve just wasted them away. But they’re 19-20 years old. Ummm…not a lot of people are super accomplished at that age. I would have preferred it if they were closer to 30 because it would have made more sense to me.  
• I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I didn’t 100% get the ending. Maybe I’m just kind of slow, but if you read it, let me know if you get it.  I get the message, I’m just not sure I get what actually happened.
